Its time for Ben's lose-weight-a-thon of 2006.   The other day while pondering life, and how great a cheeseburger would be right then, I decided that my new years resolution needed to be to run 3 times a week.  Seeing as I have no self-discipline, I had to arrange a punishment for being lazy during the work week.  If I wasn't able to do it during the work week, I'd have to make myself get up early on Saturday and run.  While talking about this at work, Jim being the gambling man that he is, wanted to put a wager on my resolution.  After some negotiation, we settled on the following terms:

  • I have to lose 20 pounds between now and March 31, 2006
  • I have to keep it off the full month of April
  • Jim is present for both the weigh-in and weigh-out.
  • If I can accomplish this, I get 100 smackers.  If I can't, Jim gets it.

I figure this is worthy enough blog material that I'll try and keep some updates of my progress on the site.  Also, if anyone else feels like making a wager, or sponsoring me in my lose-weight-a-thon just let me know how much...

I've got to go buy a scale tonight and we'll have the official weight-in some time soon.

Benjamin, it's very easy. If you don't have the motivation to run/work out on your own, get a personal trainer, my friend. It's worthy the money... They can help you with the exercises and diet, but everybody could do that, right? - just look it up online. The key thing is that you have that weekly appointment with somebody and you're spending money (nobody likes to waste money), so you go and do it right. Try to find a place over there where you don't need to sign a contract (living and learning) or pay gym's membership and try it for a few weeks... Now, one thing I've learned is that what you eat matters a lot and you're going to have to do a little sacrifice... But you get used to it. As you know I used to eat #2 Zaxby's meal (extra Zax sauce) or Chick-Fil-a #1 (no pickle, add cheese) every day. When I got on a diet I switch it to Salads... And, by the way, at the time I didn't even used to like salads... After 2 months of only eating salads, now I actually like it and I cannot eat French fries anymore... I haven't had Chick-Fil-a in months... Now, I'm eating more Mexican food, chips, cheesecake, chocolates, which are not that great either... But to compensate I decided to cut on the sodas. From 2 or 3 cans daily, I went 12 days with just water! And I don't miss it anymore. So you can get used to... You can do it!

I think you can win the bet, but not with your resolution. A pound of fat has 3500 calories, so to lose 20 pounds, you need to expend 70,000 more calories than you take in over the next 90 days. Jogging burns about 700 calories/hr, which means you to run for 100 hours in the next 90 days. That's more than an hour a day, everyday! But don't give up just yet. Dialing up your calorie burn won't get you all the way there, but you have another lever--caloric intake. And that lever is actually much more powerful because you have more opportunity to use it. Cut out non-diet sodas--I found I drank Coke out of habit more than any other reason. I switched to diet and cut 400-500 calories/day (a 3-4 soda habit). I learned this wisdom from the Hacker's Diet: http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/. I'm personal proof that one can lose 20 pounds in a few months doing nothing but a daily weigh-in and caloric intake management, and I've since maintained the same weight +/- 5 pounds for over 2 years. Without any running. :) Best wishes!

I'm in for $100 also... are we on? first 5 lbs. will come off with no soda, a few runs next 5 will require more runs, work outs, and salads next 10 will require no white stuff...no i mean like sugar, flour, rice, pasta.... sad huh? Good luck and let me know if we have a bet. mom

And remember ben. if it gets close you can always shave that beard of yours. It has to be a couple of ounces and the plus side is you will look better too.

Ben, I know you can do it. You have to really want it for yourself also though, more than just for the bet or $$. You will feel like a brand new person and it might even motivate you to keep it up. We talked about my significant weight loss last year, and I had lost about 20 pounds (if not more) in 3 months. If you ever want any advice or an ear to listen when its tough, I am more than happy to be here for you. With determination, motivation and encouragement you can accomplish this, I know it! I'm excited for you and can't wait to see your progress. Keep me updated!
